The television series was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and it is based on the 1973 film of the same name, written and directed by Michael Crichton. Meanwhile, we also get a look at what happens when behavior modifications are introduce to the hosts, as well as how new narratives are pitched. The first season of the American science fiction western television series Westworld (subtitled The Maze) premiered on HBO on October 2, 2016, and concluded on December 4, 2016, consisting of ten episodes. If guests are unhappy with Westworld they won’t return, and their $40k/day resort fee is very dear to investors. Bernard seems to have a more humanistic view of the hosts while upper management is more concerned with guest experience and investor demands. The host anomaly is certainly a cause for concern between Bernard and Theresa, but “concern” is a broadly defined term depending on the user. This alludes to the quintessential issue with Westworld-what do you do in a place where there are no consequences? In this week’s episode, “Chestnut”, we meet a pair of guests who arrive at Westworld and have very different plans for enjoying their time. The glitches seen in the Westworld hosts is a sign that things might go south at the park, but no one is ringing alarm bells just yet. No one stopped to consider whether such a creation should be created because the focus was on scaring and delighting guests, which made the investors happy. Think for a moment of Jurassic World and how the new dinosaur was touted to the investors as being bigger and badder than anything seen before. One of the biggest struggles in managing these dysfunctional theme parks is when the park operators are stuck between guest demands and investor expectations. It’s no wonder that Michael Crichton penned both Westworld and Jurassic Park both stories revolve around theme parks that go awry. The show is moving carefully, taking time to establish the setting between the android hosts, the programmers, the human guests, and, apparently, the Westworld investors. Westworld debuted last week to solid ratings for HBO, all but ensuring a second season. Westworld continues this week with “Chestnut,” offering a look at how two pairs of guests view the park, and how the hosts receive their programming and narratives.
